Bangor Police Department Officer Ed Mercier of Bangor holds the “Duck of Justice,” police department mascot, which led the way for more than 160 marchers who gathered in Pickering Square on Oct. 27 to take part in the Bangor Walks to End Abuse event. The duck, a wood duck, a product of the art of taxidermy, and wearing a regal handmade purple satin cape banded with silver sequins denoting his status, rode in a toy wagon pulled by one of the marchers. The duck served as a symbol of hope for those who currently are victims of domestic violence and as a reminder that some Maine women have died as a result of such abuse.
