ALFRED, Maine — Three York County corrections officers and four former officers were indicted by the grand jury Thursday on charges of smuggling drugs into the jail, according to officials.
York County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette said in a statement that the three officers have been placed on leave and are under administrative review and the four former officers all resigned earlier this year.
In February, jail administrators had received information that contraband had been smuggled into the York County Jail, according to Ouellette, and during the same time period, an officer in central Maine saw a photograph on social media that appeared to have been taken from inside the jail.
The sheriff said the man in the photo was Chase Bellefountaine, an inmate, and the background on the picture appeared to have been taken in his cell.
A search of Bellefountaine’s jail cell and belongings did not turn up a cellphone or any other device used to take a picture, according to Ouellette, and information was gathered that he had been distributing drugs while in jail. Another inmate, Gregory Morin, also is suspected of trafficking and possessing drugs while in jail, Ouellette said.
Further information gathered revealed that on at least one occasion, a corrections officer introduced the contraband into the facility and allegedly delivered it to an accomplice of Bellefountaine, Mercedes Cullicutt, who is not an inmate, Ouellette said.
After jail investigators gathered information and forwarded it to the York County district attorney’s office, the district attorney’s office found it fit to present the details to the grand jury.
The following individuals were indicted:
Steven Thomas, 25, Biddeford, trafficking in prison contraband.
Connar Bogan, 21, Kennebunk, trafficking in prison contraband.
