It all began back in 1965 when the Bangor Daily News Sports Department dreamed up a weekly game of pick ’em involving high school and college football games.

This fall, the tradition continues as BDN staffers, a season-long guest and our weekly guest match wits with our readers for 10 weeks during the 49th edition of the BDN Football Forecast.

Each week, we’ll give you the opportunity to pick 20 games — to find who really knows Maine football.

Ryan McLaughlin is back to defend his staff championship after edging season guest Dale Duff of WEZQ Radio (92.9 FM The Ticket) by a single game in a Week 11 tiebreaker. McLaughlin, who works on the news side, has won twice in the last three years.

Our 2014 season guest is Matt Boutwell, a radio sportscaster who writes a blog for the BDN: “Off the Mic, Maine Sports: The Way It Should Be.”

Matty is a morning radio host for Z105.5 FM in Auburn, serves as the Voice of the Oxford Hills Vikings on WOXO 92.7 in Norway, and is the program director for MBR Radio. He lives in Mechanic Falls with his family.

Kicking it off for the weekly guests is Millinocket native Brandon Portwine, who is director of baseball at Sluggers in Brewer and is an assistant baseball coach at Husson University in Bangor.

Portwine is a graduate of Stearns High School, where he played football, hockey and baseball. He graduated from Kents Hill in 1992.

Portwine attended the University of Maine and was bullpen catcher for the team from 1993-94 before graduating in 1998. He coached the Stearns baseball team from 2005-2011 and headed the Lincoln Lumber American Legion team from 2005-2013.

Portwine lives in Bangor.
