By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — A former prison guard at the Maine Correctional Center is being held at the York County Jail after being accused of sexually assaulting a female inmate last month, according to officials.

Bret Butterfield, 23, of Auburn was taken into custody Aug. 26, according to an intake officer at the York County Jail.

The officer said Butterfield is being held on $50,000 bail.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland confirmed Butterfield’s arrest Thursday morning, but said he had few details.

Scott Fish, director of special projects for the Maine Department of Corrections, said Butterfield resigned from his position at the Windham facility June 30 but offered no further comment on the case.
