WINTHROP AND ORONO – Mary C. Leavitt, 94, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on September 1, 2014 at Heritage Rehabilitation & Living Center in Winthrop, Maine after a full and loving life. She was born in Orono, August 2, 1920 to Stanley and Freda Cowin of Orono.
She graduated in 1942,with a B.S. from the University of Maine. She taught gym at St Mary’s school and later taught sixth grade at Jefferson Street School in Old Town, for 13 years before retiring in 1983. She was an active member at the St Mary’s Church in Orono. She volunteered at the Soup Kitchen, Eastern Maine Medical Center, and at other non-profit organizations. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and loved woodworking.
Mrs. Leavitt was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Laurence Leavitt, a son, Laurence Leavitt Jr., brothers, Stanley Jr. and James and sisters, Polly and Anna. She is survived by her sons: James Leavitt and his wife, Dawna of Winthrop, Walter Leavitt and his wife, Catherine of Old Town, and Tim Leavitt and his wife, Tammie of Winthrop, she was survived by her sister, Helen Gagne of Campobello Island, N.B., grandchildren, Heather, Holly, Paul, Jacob, and Kevin and 4 great-granddaughters.

There will be a funeral Mass at Holy Family Church, Old Town, 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26. Burial to follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Orono. Donations may be made to MaineGeneral Hospice, 10 Water St., Suite 307, Waterville, ME 04901.
