Windham man gets eight months for passing $19,000 in counterfeit traveler’s checks

PORTLAND, Maine — A Windham man will spend the next eight months in jail after he was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland for passing $19,000 worth of counterfeit traveler’s checks, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Keith Coleman, 48, also was sentenced by Justice Nancy Torresen to three years of supervised release for passing 190 counterfeit American Express Travelers Cheques valued at $100.

He pled guilty on May 1.

According to court documents, Coleman passed the checks at Applebee’s, Best Buy, CVS Caremark, Denny’s, TGI Fridays, Longhorn Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Radio Shack, Rite Aid, Ruby Tuesday, Staples, Target and Toys “R” Us in Maine and Massachusetts between December 2013 and January 2014.

In addition to jail time, Coleman also must pay $19,000 in restitution.
