FORT FAIRFIELD – Anna H. Grass, 91, wife of the late Loomis Grass, passed away Sunday evening, August 31, 2014 at her Fort Fairfield residence, following an extended illness. She was born June 27, 1923 in Aroostook Junction, New Brunswick, the daughter of Charles and Amy (Dewley) Lovely.
She attended school in Aroostook Junction and was married to Loomis Grass on September 20, 1944. Anna had been an active member of the Fort Fairfield Community Wesleyan Church where she served in numerous capacities, including chairperson of the Social and Benevolence Committee, and attended the Easton Wesleyan Church for the last 13 years. Anna had been employed as a cook at the former Fort Fairfield Community General Hospital for many years, and also worked as a sales clerk at the Modern Shoppe, Fort Fairfield. Anna deeply loved her family, and her hospitality will be remembered by all who knew her. Her home became a refuge for many, including several area pastors over the years, her cooking and baking were enjoyed by both her family and “adopted” family as well.
In addition to her parents, Anna was predeceased by her son, Cecil Lovely on May 25, 1979; her husband, Loomis on November 17, 1979; six brothers, Harold, Leslie, Burton, Daniel, Victor and Lawrence Lovely; and four sisters, Estella Welch, Freda Bell, Dorothy St. Amand and Doris McNally. She is survived by three daughters, Gloria R. Thurber and her husband, Fran of Hornell, NY, Cheryl J. Grass and Darlene J. Grass, both of Fort Fairfield; four grandchildren, Stephen Thurber and his wife, Bibbiana of Huntingtown, MD, David Thurber and his wife, April of Los Angeles, CA, Dale Thurber of Bath, NY, Lisa Perze and her husband, James of Grand Folks, ND; She also leaves behind her “adopted” family, Rev. Mel Norton and his wife, Sandra of Woodstock, New Brunswick, Brenda Dyer, Mike and Diana Mulherin, Charlene and Oscar Argraves, all of Fort Fairfield; Tama and Jerry Palmer of Presque Isle, Vaughn and Laurie Martin of Easton; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Shirley Webster of Andover, New Brunswick; dear friends who’s lives Anna touched, Greta Kimball of Presque Isle, Shirley Buhro of Fort Fairfield, Sandra Burtchell of Fort Fairfield, Ann Badt and Jean Whitehouse both of North Carolina, and many others too numerous to list.
Friends may call Thursday September 4, 2014 from 7-9 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2014 at the funeral home with Rev. Bernard Brown and the Rev. Jason Coffman co-officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Grass to the Easton Wesleyan Church, P.O. Box 15, Easton, ME 04740.
