Theater to audition small dogs for role of Toto

BANGOR — Penobscot Theatre Company is seeking a docile dog with a dramatic flair to fill the role of Toto, in its holiday production “The Wizard of Oz.” Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport will hold canine auditions 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Advance registration is required to audition.The show will run December 4-28, with rehearsals starting Nov. 3.

“We are looking for a pooch with presence,” said Newport, “a dog whose personality transcends the stage and helps tell this enchanting story.”

In the film version of “The Wizard of Oz,” Toto was a cairn terrier, but Penobscot Theatre Company will consider other breeds as well. Any dog weighing less than 12 pounds that is gentle, obedient, reasonably well trained and great with people of all ages is encouraged to audition.

Canine thespians must have their owners submit on their behalf a photo and registration form by Sept 5 to: Penobscot Theatre Company, 115 Main St., Fourth Floor, Bangor, ME, 04401, attn. TOTO. Upon receipt of the registration form, the theater will send participants specific audition times. No walk-ins will be permitted on the day of the audition.
