Truck, dry conditions spark fire along I-95, I-395 in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine — Firefighters warned motorists to be especially careful with smoking materials after a passing truck sparked a grass fire about a mile long through parts of Interstates 95 and 395 on Saturday, officials said.

High winds and unusually dry conditions aided the flames as the fire ran from Interstate 395 west to the clover leaf merger with Interstate 95 south along the highway for about a mile, Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Tom Higgins said.

At about the same time, another grass fire was reported on a much shorter stretch of I-95 in Alton, Higgins said.

Both fires were reported at about 11:50 a.m., Higgins said. Hampden Fire Department firefighters checked for extension of flames along their sections of I-95, which run between Hammond and Hermon ponds.

The National Weather Service pegged winds at 15 mph, mostly out of the south.
