Nearly 200 pounds of salmon on its way to Eastport for this weekend’s festival

EASTPORT, Maine — Eastport will celebrate salmon and other seafood this weekend with the city’s annual Eastport Salmon and Seafood Festival.

A few thousand people are expected to attend the festival, according to Meg Keay, president of the Eastport Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event.

The grilled salmon lunch Sunday, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., typically is one of the most popular activities of the festival, she said. Nearly 200 pounds of salmon — 500 6-ounce portions — have been ordered for the meal.

The festival, which was expanded to include more seafood offerings in 2013 and was renamed from the Eastport Salmon Festival, also serves up chowders, oysters on the half-shell, and wine and beer, Keay noted.

The festival features arts and crafts vendors exhibiting their work, a farmers market and live music at mid-day both days.

Other activities include a walking tour of the trees of Eastport, buildings of architectural significance and art studios, as well as a 5K run.
