FORT KENT, Maine — The University of Maine Fort Kent men’s soccer team began the 2014 campaign with a 6-0 win Thursday night over Crandall University of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada in a mutual opener.

Senior Willie Monthe opened the scoring in the third minute off a through ball from Ben Kluvers and added goal another just 90 seconds later.

Kluvers, the leading goal scorer a year ago for UMFK, added two first-half goals of his own to close out the first half. On his second goal, he got behind the defense and chipped the shot over the goalie from 20 yards away.

Milton Christopher and Frantzeau Germain added second-half goals in the final 13:15.

UMFK finished with 22 shots, continually peppering Crandall goalkeeper Noah Edwards (8 saves). Goalies Jamie Cleland and Ahkeim Forbes split halves in goal and faced only one shot.

The two teams meet again at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Moncton..
