Juveniles charged in rash of South Portland burglaries

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Three juveniles have been charged in a rash of residential burglaries in the city spanning from July to late this month.

South Portland police Sgt. Steven Webster said approximately 30 burglaries have been reported in which burglars entered private residences and stole items from the homes.

Webster said several of the burglaries occurred during the day. Most were reported from the area of Broadway and Elm streets all the way to the city’s Redbank area.

On Wednesday, police received information that allowed detectives to aggressively investigate the cases, and that led to three area juveniles, ages 16 and 17, being charged with theft and burglary, the sergeant said.

All three teens are currently serving house arrest. Webster said police believe the juveniles are responsible for many of the burglaries. Many of the stolen items have been recovered.

Police are encouraging residents to lock doors and windows and keep valuables in a safe if possible.
