An Alabama couple has been charged with raping an underage relative multiple times in an unsuccessful attempt to impregnate her so they could keep the baby, a local newspaper reported.

Jeremy and Amanda Swann, both 29-year-old residents of Jones, about 40 miles northwest of Montgomery, were arrested last week and have been charged with first-degree rape, the Selma Times-Journal reported on Saturday.

Each was being held on $500,000 bond, the newspaper said.

The case came to light when the couple filed a complaint with the Alabama Department of Human Resources stating that they wanted custody of the girl, whose age was not reported, on the grounds that Amanda Swann’s mother was sexually assaulting her, the newspaper quoted authorities as saying.

During a subsequent investigation, the girl told investigators that the couple had propositioned her for sex and Jeremy Swann had raped her six times, the newspaper reported, citing the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

The Swanns wanted the girl to get pregnant so they could have the baby, the newspaper quoted the sheriff’s department as saying.

Jeremy Swann’s mother, Dianna Swann, 57, who lives with the couple, was aware of the sexual assaults but did not intervene to stop them, the sheriff’s department said.

She has been charged with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and was being held on $6,000 bond, the newspaper reported.

All three were due in court on Monday for bond hearings, it reported.

Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman Jr. and Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
