Achille goal lifts Maine women’s soccer team to opening victory

ORONO — Charlene Achille scored on a direct kick with 7 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Maine Black Bears to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats at Mahaney Diamond Friday.

The Bears were awarded the direct kick just outside the penalty box and Achille rocketed a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal, past Quinnipiac goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki.

The first half of the game was equally played with no distinct advantage in possession, but both teams had a couple of great chances early in the second half with Maine’s Claudia Dube-Trempe and Quinnipiac’s Grodzki making some big saves.

Quinnipiac outshot Maine 11-7 with Dube-Trempe making three saves and Grodzki making two.

The Black Bears had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Maine returns to action at 1 p.m. Monday when it hosts Bryant at Mahaney Diamond.
