BROOKLIN – William H. Fenn, 84, died August 21, 2014 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on September 16, 1929 in Bangor, Maine, the son of Mary Cushman Fenn and William H. Fenn III.
Bill grew up in Wilmington Delaware and attended Tower Hill School and Phillips Andover Academy. Bill entered the US Marines and later graduated from Yale University in 1954. Bill married Jane Miller of Baltimore and began a career working for General Electric Company. Bill raised a family with Jane, locating primarily in Florida. Bill loved hunting, fishing, skiing, and sailing and shared these passions with his family and friends. Bill and family moved to New Hampshire where he enjoyed his Dover farm and he retired from General Electric.
Bill later divorced and moved to Ellsworth Maine where he became primary caretaker and trustee for the family property at Branch Lake. He remarried to Marcia Beebe in East Blue Hill, Maine. They built a home on the coast in Brooklin enjoying life there for 35 years. They sailed their beautiful sloop “BLUE MOON” from the Bahamas to the Bras D’or Lake. He was instrumental in coordinating a Conservation Easement with the State of Maine and City of Ellsworth that protected hundreds of acres of family land from development forever. Bill volunteered his time and provided financial support to community organizations he supported like Blue Hill Hospital, Friendship Cottage, and Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club where he was Commodore from 1984 until 1987.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Marcia, his son, William Fenn Jr. and wife, Nadina of Maxfield, ME, his daughter Susan Fenn and husband William Nickerson, of Bird , Alaska, His daughter, Holly Fenn of Orrs Island, ME, and his daughter, Mary Fenn Weickert and her husband William Weickert of Cumberland, ME. Step children, Philinda Shepley of Springfield, MA, Robert Shepley of Beverly Farms, MA, Roger Shepley and wife, Pam of Dedham, MA. and Sarah Shepley and husband Mark Brandhorst, South Paris, ME. Bill had 10 grandchildren including Sunny Fenn McNally, Jessica Albert Gregory, Will Fenn, Ben, Kelly and Stuart Renaud, Hannah McComish, Charlie, Ellie and Lauren Weickert and had many nieces and nephews. Bill had two great grandchildren, John McNally and Camden Renaud. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary F. Raley and Patricia F. McGeorge.
A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held 11 am, Thursday, August 28, 2014 at St. Francis-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, 330 Hinckley Ridge Rd., Blue Hill.
