Walter H. Sauer

PITTSFIELD – Walter H. Sauer, 86, died peacefully on August 11, 2014, at his home in Pittsfield, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.
He was the husband of the late Hildegard (Frederick) Sauer who died in 2010. They were married for 57 years.
Walter was born on May 20, 1928, in Kitchener, Ontario, the only son of the late Jacob and Marie Sauer. He received his primary education in the Kitchener schools and in 1952 graduated from Pratt Institute in New York City with a degree in leather chemistry. He returned to Canada and worked at Lang Tanning in Kitchener until 1955 when he took a job as the general manager at Irving Tanning Co. in Hartland, Maine, where he worked for 40 years. Walter was dedicated to his work and took great pride in the employees and the products they produced at the tannery. He later became Vice President of Manufacturing and as a member of the American Leather Chemists Association he had the opportunity to travel and attend meetings all over the world. He made his home in Pittsfield with his family, who were the light of his life. He was especially proud of his grandsons. He belonged to the Shriners and was a 50 year member of the Meridian Masonic Lodge #125 AF & AM of Pittsfield.
Mr. Sauer is survived by his twin sons, Paul Sauer M.D. and his wife, Carol, of Birmingham, Alabama and Philip Sauer of Pittsfield; his daughter, Lisa Sauer M.D. and her husband, William Kragness M.D. of Hartland; grandchildren, Paul F. Sauer, Jr. and John Philip Sauer of Birmingham, Alabama.
He was the brother to his surviving sibling, Delores Houle of Peterborough, Ontario. He was brother-in-law of Michael Frederick and Elisabeth Frederick Gartman.
Mr. Sauer was predeceased by his sisters-in law Christine Bohac Frederick and Helen Gartman Frederick and brothers-in-law Harold Gartman, William Frederick and Donald Houle.
Walter leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, with a masonic service at 3:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m., at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. Pastor Elaine Hewes of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bangor, Maine, will officiate. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m, September 5, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions could be made to a charity of your choice.
