BELFAST, Maine — Two men accused of sexually abusing children were indicted last week by the Waldo County grand jury.

Jason Baldwin, 40, of Palermo came to police attention last summer after a teenage girl’s mother complained that he was harassing her daughter. The mother said that Baldwin was “obsessed with her daughter” and was even banging on the windows trying to get the girl’s attention, according to the report given August 2013 by the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies spoke with the teen, she told them that she had had a sexual relationship with Baldwin since before she was 16, the age of consent in Maine. When Detective Merl Reed spoke with Baldwin and tried to place him under arrest, Baldwin allegedly pulled away from Reed, ran into his residence and locked the door. His parents reportedly ended up coming to the house to talk Baldwin into surrendering, and the situation did not escalate.

The Waldo County grand jury charged him with 14 total criminal counts, including four class A counts of gross sexual assault for actions that began in 2009 with a minor under 14 years of age. He also was charged with unlawful sexual contact, five counts of sexual abuse of a minor, furnishing liquor to a minor, domestic violence assault, refusing to submit to arrest and escape.

Another man accused of child sexual abuse is Jason M. Brown, 47, of Waldo, who was charged with one count of unlawful sexual contact from 2004 and one count of unlawful sexual touching from 2014. In May, he was charged with assaulting a toddler, who had begun acting strangely when her diaper was changed. The toddler told her father that she had been hurt in her “private area,” according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Maine State Police Detective Scott Bryant.

The toddler allegedly said that Brown had hurt her. During the investigation, another person familiar with the family told police that she had been sexually assaulted by Brown when she was 12 in 2004.
