Bangor man accused of photographing sexual abuse of girls, posting images to website

BANGOR, Maine — A local man made his first appearance Wednesday before a federal judge on child pornography charges.

Timothy S. Klimas, 26, of Bangor admitted to investigators he photographed sexual abuse of three Maine girls — one 6 years old, another 2 years old — and posted the pictures on a website, according to the affidavit. The age of the third girl, described as “prepubescent or early pubescent,” was not listed in the document filed in U.S. District Court.

Klimas was charged with one count each of production of child pornography and transportation of child pornography. He did not enter pleas because he has not yet been indicted by a federal grand jury, which is expected to convene next month.

The Bangor man agreed to be held without bail until the outcome of his case, according to information posted on the court’s electronic case filing system.

Klimas came to the attention of FBI agents who investigate child pornography when they found more than 100 pornographic images of the girls that were posted in July to a website on which child pornography is exchanged, the affidavit said. In August, the FBI learned Klimas was being investigated by Newport police for the alleged sexual abuse of two girls, ages 6 and 2.

When Bangor police located the older victim, they found Klimas at her home, according to the affidavit. He was arrested after being questioned at the Bangor police station.

Information about whether Klimas will be charged in state court in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of the girls was not available Thursday.

If convicted, he faces between 15 and 30 years in federal prison on the production count. Klimas faces between five and 20 years in prison on the transportation charge. He could be fined up to $250,000 on each count.
