RANGELEY, Maine — A local man was arrested Saturday after allegedly stealing a pair of mountain bikes and trying to sell one for $4,800 on Craigslist, according to police.

The bikes that Randall Thompson, 18, of Rangeley stole from a condo in town on Aug. 1 were valued at $6,000 and $1,700, Rangeley police Sgt. Jared Austin said. Thompson had posted the more expensive bike for sale, Austin added.

The sergeant said the bikes were locked to a rack on a vehicle, but Thompson used bolt cutters to cut the cable and free the cycles.

On Saturday, police found a bike matching a description of one of the stolen cycles on Craigslist, and that Thompson had allegedly planned on selling it in Auburn.

Austin said Auburn police assisted Rangeley officers in the case, and Thompson was arrested after selling the bike to an undercover officer.

Thompson was charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, a Class C felony, and criminal mischief, a Class D misdemeanor.

Thompson was taken to Franklin County Jail after his arrest. His first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 23.
