WINTERPORT, Maine — A local child suffered serious injuries Wednesday evening when the bike he was riding was struck by a pickup truck, according to police.

The crash happened on Whig Street, also known as Route 139 and 69, near the Elm Street intersection, shortly after 4:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Dale Brown of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department.

Brown declined to release name or age of the child or the driver of the truck but said both are locals. He said the family of the child had been notified and added that the investigation into what caused the crash is still underway.

Around 7:30 p.m., Brown said he was trying to learn more about the condition of the child through the hospital.

The child on the bicycle was traveling toward Route 1A when the crash occurred, according to Brown. He was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Brown said he planned on issuing a news release later Wednesday night that might contain more information.

The road was shut down as of 7:30 p.m. while investigators took measurements and reconstructed the crash scene.
