MEXICO, Maine — Police on Monday released the name of a man killed in an armed standoff with police on Sunday night.

An autopsy is scheduled Monday for the body of Steven Piirainen, 52, of South Paris, according to Department of Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The two officers who fired at Piirainen, State Trooper Paul Casey and Mexico Reserve Officer Dean Benson have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol when an officer is involved in a shooting, McCausland said.

In addition, the Maine Attorney General’s office will also investigate, McCausland said.

McCausland had said in a Sunday release that Piirainen had allegedly stolen a pickup truck in Paris and led police on a pursuit to a Mexico convenience store. He had also exchanged gunfire with police and was found dead inside the truck.

No police officers were injured in the incident, McCausland said. He said Piirainen had recently moved in with his parents in South Paris.
