PITTSFIELD, Maine — A man driving north on I-95 fell asleep at the wheel and veered off the left side of the highway, before his vehicle came to rest, drivers side down, according to Trooper Steve Morrel of the Maine State Police.

“It was a bad crash,” he said.

The incident, which held up traffic in the area, occurred just north of exit 150 in Pittsfield.

The Pittsfield Fire Department had to cut the roof off the 2006 Cherokee to free the driver, Morrel said.

The driver was transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield with non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was also slowed much further south on the interstate after a canoe became detached from a vehicle and another car hit it, according to a dispatcher with the state police. That accident occurred in Kennebunk and resulted in no injuries.
