SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — An 18-year-old transient is behind bars after police say he came up behind a 57-year-old man and “violently” assaulted and robbed him.

South Portland police said Shane Cote was arrested on a Class B robbery charge.

Police said the early Saturday morning incident on Q Street took place as the 57-year-old victim, whose name is not being released, walked home from work. Police said Cote grabbed the man’s belongings and ran off after the assault.

With the help of a police K-9, police were able to track down Cote.

“Someone responsible for this story of random act of violence needs to be held accountable,” said Lt. Frank Clark in a press release.

Cote is being held on $1,000 bail at the Cumberland County Jail.
