Roscoe Lee Arnold

BANGOR – Roscoe Lee Arnold Jr died August 13, 2014 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor after a long battle with old age.
Roscoe was born January 8, 1924 in Bangor to Roscoe Lee Arnold Sr. and Annabelle (Buchanan) Arnold. He was the husband of and predeceased by Elizabeth Marguerite (Powers) Arnold and Frances Jean (Wright) Arnold. Roscoe attended Bangor Schools and graduated in 1942 from Bangor High School. He was Sergeant Major of the Bangor High School ROTC at graduation.Roscoe joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served three years as a Second Class Electricians Mate in the USS Wyman (DE-38) performing anti-submarine and convoy duties in the Pacific. In July of 1944 Wyman engaged and sank the Japanese submarines RO-48 and I-55 while patrolling the shipping lanes between Eniwetok and Saipan. Of the four Japanese submarines sank by destroyers in the Pacific in July of 1944 Wyman accounted for two of them. From Iwo Jima to Okinawa and all of the actions in between he lived a life of the destroyerman manning his general quarter’s station below the water line in Wyman’s engine room. Roscoe’s decorations include the World War Two Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic- Pacific Medal Theater Medal (5 stars), Philippine Liberation Medal ( 1 star) and the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was a plank owner on Wyman and put her out of commission in early 1946. He is truly the last of the real destroyermen that served in the United States Navy during World War II.He was an electrician who worked 40 years of his life for the Dole Company and served as an officer in the local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union.
He belonged to the American Legion and is a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1761 Bangor, ME

Four children, Bruce Arnold and his wife Hyun-Jue of Greenbush, Susan Yanush and her husband Charles of Greenfield, Darlene Harriman of Alton and Mark Arnold of Bangor.
Predeceased by a son Gary who died on 10/16/03
Five grandchildren, Trevor, Teddy, Alger, James and Jason
Two great grand daughters Shenen and Brittni
