PORTLAND, Maine — Scammers claiming to be representatives of AARP are fraudulently calling Maine residents trying to sell a medical alert system, the seniors’ organization announced Wednesday.
Callers told residents that a physician had referred them to the program and that they would receive $3,000 in grocery store certificates for buying a system, according to a press release from AARP.
The calls were made from the phone number 626-207-2454, listed in California.
“This is a scam,” the news release states. “AARP is not making calls soliciting customers for a senior alert system.”
AARP urged Mainers who receive a call to hang up and report it to their local police department and to the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
