Former Lee Academy basketball standout Tom Bird has been named the new University of Maine Fort Kent men’s basketball coach, UMaine Fort Kent Athletic Director Bill Ashby announced in a news release Monday.

Bird comes to UMaine Fort Kent following a year as director of women’s basketball operations at North Dakota State University. Prior to that, Bird served as the assistant video coordinator for University of Florida women’s basketball.

Bird had also served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Thomas College in Waterville and is a Thomas graduate with a bachelor’s degree in sport management.

Bird’s coaching career began at Lee Academy, with stints as a men’s postgraduate basketball assistant coach and a varsity boys’ basketball assistant. He is the third all-time leading scorer for the varsity boys program.

Bird replaces Eric Werntgen who has accepted a position with a company in Richardson, Texas, which provides college planning for high school students.

Bird will also work as an assistant athletic director and sports information director at UMaine Fort Kent.

At Lee, Bird once went 24-for-24 from the free-throw line in a game and was a semifinalist for the state’s Mr. Basketball Award as a senior in 2007.
