SACO, Maine — A Buxton man is facing multiple charges in connection with an attempted home invasion early Friday morning, police said Monday.

Derek Smith, 23, is facing charges of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, criminal mischief and violating conditions of release, Saco Deputy Chief Jeff Holland said.

Police had responded to a residence on Clayton Drive shortly after 3 a.m. Friday when it was reported two men, including Smith, had been attempting to make entry into the residence, according to Holland.

A homeowner was able to identify one man and several residents in the area advised that the suspects had fled in a small, dark colored vehicle and provided a license plate number to police.

Holland said Scarborough police found the vehicle after it crashed on the Broadturn Road, but a canine track was unsuccessful.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, Saco police arrested Smith and took him to the York County Jail.

Damage to the home included a window casing and screen while a vehicle parked in the driveway sustained a pair of damaged windows, Holland said. Smith’s alleged weapon was a baseball bat.

Further charges are possible as police seek the other man.
