BERWICK, Maine — The Berwick Fire Department extinguished a vehicle fire Saturday evening on the corner of Pine Hill Road and Deer Trail Lane.

About 5 p.m., the driver of a Volkswagen Beetle noticed smoke in his rearview mirror and pulled over. After he got out of the vehicle, it caught fire.

The driver alerted the South Berwick Police Department about 5:03 p.m. Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Plante said it took about five minutes to put out the fire and another 10 to 15 minutes to ensure it wouldn’t start again.

Plante said there also was a considerable amount of oil and gasoline underneath the vehicle that made its way to the ditch on the side of the road. Firefighters laid down absorbent pads to soak up the liquids, but Plante said the Department of Environmental Protection will respond to completely clean up the oil and gasoline.

There were no injuries during the incident.
