Downtown Bangor Partnership posts maps, event and business listings

By Nick Kaye

BANGOR, Maine — Those who have been out and about in downtown Bangor this week may have noticed new splashes of color and information on the gray metal boxes that house access to city utilities.

Caitlin Brooke of the Downtown Bangor Partnership and Jason Bird, community and economic development officer for the city, posted the first two Discover Downtown Bangor maps and guides on Wednesday. One is located in front of City Hall on Harlow Street and the other is on the corner of Exchange and State streets.

Each map includes a comprehensive listing of downtown businesses, divided into the categories “arts,” “shop,” “eat and drink,” “services,” “stay,” and “fitness.” The maps are accompanied by an overview of major events in Bangor, including the American Folk Festival, the Downtown Art Walks, the Bangor Farmers Market and more.

“The Downtown Bangor Partnership hopes that everyone — from 50-year residents to folks passing through — will find something they didn’t think they would in downtown Bangor, and find it with ease. There really is a lot going on in our ‘little big city,’ and we hope this will be a tool for anyone to easily navigate the downtown area,” Brooke said.

Jayme Titus of Orono seemed to like the idea when she noticed the map and guide on the corner of Exchange and State streets.

“I like the looks of it. It’s very colorful,” she said.

Titus usually gets information about Bangor events and businesses on Facebook, but she said she welcomes this new way to navigate the city.

The Downtown Bangor Partnership plans to post more of the maps and guides around downtown.

Brooke said she hopes to see the maps updated on an annual basis. Businesses that weren’t included in the first print may express their interest by listing themselves on www.downtownbangor.com, she added.
