BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 51-year-old Brunswick man was arrested Monday after police say he assaulted his 75-year-old mother and threatened to kill her if she called for help.

Eric Engstrom was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening and obstructing report of a crime, according to Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department.

Police were called to the Maplewood Manor mobile home park off Old Bath Road just after 5:30 a.m. Monday and met with the alleged victim, who appeared to be bleeding from both ears, Hagan said.

She told officers that she fell in the middle of the night and called repeatedly to her son, who lives in the same home, to help her get up. He eventually woke up and helped his mother back to bed, Hagan said.

“He allegedly assaulted her because he couldn’t get back to sleep,” Hagan said.

Engstrom allegedly struck the woman several times and shook her, then took her phone and threatened to kill her if she called police, Hagan said.

The woman was taken by Brunswick Rescue to Mid Coast Hospital.

Engstrom remained in Cumberland County Jail on Tuesday morning, with bail set at $540 cash. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon, according to a jail official.
