FARMINGDALE, Maine — A Unity farmer and four cows he was hauling escaped injury Tuesday morning when the trailer transporting the cows tipped over on Route 201, police said.

The accident was reported around 9:30 a.m., according to Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

The homemade trailer that Jose Avila, 61, had attached to his pickup apparently began to shift just prior to the trailer tipping over, Reardon said.

The chief deputy added the accident could have been worse had it not been for chains on the truck.

The trailer was not badly damaged, according to Reardon, and the cows were transported to a nearby pasture, he added.

Police were on scene for about an hour, and Reardon said the crash did not disrupt traffic.
