Garlic Festival on Mount Desert Island and pizza on the farm in Owls Head

MDI Garlic Festival to benefit KidsPeace autism program

SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — The public is invited to celebrate the annual harvest of the Maine garlic crop at the 16th annual MDI Garlic Festival, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Smuggler’s Den Campground in Southwest Harbor.

Proceeds from the festival will benefit the KidsPeace New England Autism Spectrum Disorders Program.

Presented by Nostrano, which is owned and operated by chef Frank Pendola, the event will feature garlic dish tastings from local restaurants, a farmers market, garlic growers, live music with the Chris Humphrey Big Band, Therapy Dogs International, the Crescent Kennel Club and more.

In the fall of 1998, Pendola and a few of his friends gathered to enjoy a variety of foods cooked with garlic. They smoked meats and made “Garlic Festival” T-shirts. The next year, the chef and his friends cooked for 100 people, and 350 friends and neighbors showed up. The festival since has grown and raised thousands of dollars for local nonprofit groups.

Full Moon dinners in Bath

If a feast featuring local produce served in a boat shed doesn’t say “Maine in the summer,” we don’t know what does. On Sunday, chef Aaron Park of Henry and Marty in Brunswick will throw a midsummer night’s dream at the second annual Bath Freight Shed Alliance Farm to Table Full Moon Dinner. The historical waterfront structure is becoming a public food hub. Seated at community tables underneath strings of white lights, steps from the Kennebec River, guests will delve into fresh food from the best seats in town. Six River Farm in Bowdoinham and music from Steamboat Gypsy will round out the night. A portion of the proceeds help supply the Morse High School Food Pantry with locally grown produce. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at 27 Commercial Street, Bath. Tickets are $45 each and can be purchased at bathfreightshed.blogspot.com.

Pizza on the farm

Forget farm to table. This time of year, bringing the oven to the farm is trending. Rockland restaurateur Kerry Altiero of Cafe Miranda will show off his 17-acre Headacre Farm in Owls Head on Saturday with an afternoon tour and pizza tasting.

A portable wood-fired pizza oven that the chef is now using for catering gigs will turn out focaccia pies made with just-harvested kale, chard and onions. Meet the restaurant’s farmer Anne Perkins, resident farm dogs and tour the gardens in the first open farm day here.

“It is kind of fun,” said Perkins, who wants to shed light on her Community Supported Agriculture program and show off the bounty she cultivates for the popular restaurant. “It’s a gigantic vegetable garden,” she said.

The always affable Altiero will be serving up the ‘za. from 11 to 2 p.m. Saturday at 54 Headacre Farm Road, Owls Head. The event is free.
