Literacy Volunteers, Darling’s brings books, ice cream to area towns

BANGOR — Literacy Volunteers of Bangor and Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause are partnering for a sweet cause — to bring the love of reading, along with a sweet treat, to children and families in the area.

Over several days, the Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause ice cream truck will be transformed into an ice cream truck and bookmobile, and will make stops in local communities to hand out free books and free ice cream. More than 1,000 new and gently used children’s books were collected through recent drives at Darling’s locations and The Briar Patch bookstore.

Through this program, coordinated by Literacy Volunteers of Bangor, any child, parent or grandparent can visit the bookmobile at any stop and choose one or more books to keep and enjoy a free ice cream. The truck will be making multiple stops in several Bangor area communities over several days:

• Noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, Old Town and Alton area communities, including Anderson Lane, Penny Lane, University Park and local parks.

• 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, Smith Elementary School in Winterport.

• Noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Second Street Park and Griffin Park in Bangor.

“I remember participating in similar events when I was little, where someone came to read to us and gave us free books, and it always stuck with me. When Literacy Volunteers talked to us about partnering with them, it was a natural fit for us to get involved,” said Gary Bellefleur, ice cream ambassador with Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause, in a press release.

“When parents struggle with their own reading skills, it can affect their children’s’ critical literacy development at a young age. Although we serve adults, we want to do it in the context of the whole family, and that means getting books into the hands of everyone in the home,” said Meredith Eaton, service coordinator at Literacy Volunteers of Bangor. “This Bookmobile partnership with Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause allows us to do just that.”
