BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Police Department will host its annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Lt. Paul Edwards said in a statement Monday.

The night out is a collaborative effort between the city’s West and East Side neighborhood watch groups designed to strengthen communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and police while heightening drug and crime prevention awareness.

Bangor is one of 15,000 communities nationwide and across U.S. territories, Canada and military bases to participate in the event sponsored by Target.

Residents are asked to turn on porch lights from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
