Two boys seriously injured after being hit by truck in Waldoboro

WALDOBORO, Maine — Police continue investigating a Friday night accident in Waldoboro in which two boys on bicycles were injured when they were hit by a truck.

The accident occurred around 8:20 p.m. Friday in the area of 603 Union Road, or Route 235, in Waldoboro. Police said Joseph Benedix, 24, of Waldoboro was driving south as two boys were talking to pedestrians on the side of the road. Benedix told police he did not see the two boys but swerved to try and avoid them.

The truck struck a 15-year-old boy, who was thrown from his bike and landed on the shoulder of the road. Police believe a 14-year-old boy was struck by the 15-year-old’s bicycle.

The 15-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by Lifeflight. The 14-year-old boy suffered a leg injury and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The pedestrians were not injured. The boys were not wearing helmets.

The accident remains under investigation.
