Brewer, Oakland stay alive in American Legion state baseball tournament


BANGOR, Maine — The top three batters in the Brewer batting order accounted for eight hits and eight runs batted in and the Falcons scored nine runs in the last two innings Friday afternoon to register a 14-4 victory over Morrill Post of South Portland in the American Legion baseball state tournament at Husson University’s Winkin Complex.

Brewer (18-7) advances to Saturday’s 3 p.m. game against unbeaten Bangor (21-4), which shut out Bessey Motors of South Paris by a 10-1 score.

In Friday’s second game, Post 51 of Oakland (12-12) earned a spot in Saturday’s noon elimination game against Bessey Motors with a 6-2 win over Pastime Club of Lewiston.

In Friday’s opener, Greg Warmuth knocked in four runs with a triple and two singles and also scored four times to spearhead a 12-hit attack. Kyle Alexander posted three singles with two RBIs and Jeff Weeks added two singles and two RBIs for the Falcons.

Weeks came on in the fifth inning and pitched five innings of six-hit ball. He allowed two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and one walk in relief of starter Carter DeRedin, who gave up three hits and two runs with four strikeouts and six walks.

Robert Graff paced Morrill Post with a single and an RBI and Adam Helmke doubled and scored a run. Brad Sowerby, who came on with one out in the second inning, suffered the loss while going the rest of the way.

Brewer took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning, aided by two Morrill Post errors.

Leading 5-3, the Falcons put the game out of reach by scoring five times in the eighth. Brendon Moore hit a two-run single during the uprising, which was fueled by two wild pitches and a passed ball. Warmuth and Alexander added run-scoring singles in the frame.

Brewer tacked on four runs in the ninth, with Warmuth’s triple the big blow.

Oakland 6, Lewiston 2

In the second game, Patrick Breton scattered eight hits and gave up only one run in eight innings to help Post 51 advance.

Breton fanned two and did not walk a batter before A.J. Godin finished up in the ninth.

Jake Dexter spearheaded the Post 51 offense with a double, two singles and two RBIs. He knocked in the runs with a first-inning double.

Cody Martin added a run-scoring infield single in the second inning, then Josh Woodard stroked a sacrifice fly during a two-run third that pushed Oakland’s advantage to 5-0.

Caleb Dostie (RBI), Carter Chabot, Alex Small and Matt Poulin posted two singles apiece for Lewiston. Ryan Riordan went the distance, allowing eight hits and six runs (three earned) with six strikeouts and three walks.

Junior Legion

Bangor 8, Wells 1

At The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, Nick Cowperthwaite and Sebastian Mathews combined on a seven-hitter as the Cadets won their opener in the state tournament.

Cowperthwaite pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts, then Mathews worked two innings of four-hit ball.

Gary Farnham plated two runs with a double and a single and Cowperthwaite added two singles and two RBIs for Bangor. Joey Moir singled twice and Tanner Goodine provided a triple and an RBI.

Cody Cousins led Wells with a double, a single and an RBI and Nick Cousins singled twice.
