KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Cayenne pepper, olive oil and goat cheese are probably not the first things that come to mind when you think of ice cream. But one woman wants to change the way we think about the summertime staple, and her unique combinations taste a lot like sweet success.
Lauren Guptil moved to Maine from Argentina with an idea to open an ice cream shop that features what she calls “whimsical” flavors, such as strawberry basil and goat cheese blackberry chambord.
Guptil never made ice cream before, but she found a space and took a course. Just over two years later, crowds clamor to try her concoctions at Rococo Artisan Ice Cream in Kennebunkport.
Sweet avocado cayenne, Nutella cranberry, strawberry basil and spicy rocky road are just a few of the unique ice cream flavors she serves.
In July, Trip Adviser ranked Rococo as the sixth best in the country based on quality, quantity and recent reviews.
Another local shop making national headlines will be featured on the Food Network later this month. The episode of Restaurant Impossible featuring the Uncle Andy’s makeover in South Portland will air on Aug. 27.
