CAMDEN, Maine — Police said that a pedestrian hit by a Hummer SUV Thursday evening in downtown Camden suffered broken bones and cuts to her head, but that it could have been much worse for her.

“She’s going to be laid up for a while, but she was very, very lucky,” Sgt. Dan Brown of the Camden Police Department said Friday.

Nancy Coyne, 57, of Camden had been heading north on Mechanic Street in a large, black SUV, when she rolled to a halt at the Washington Street intersection, Brown said.

Another vehicle had approached the intersection, too, but Coyne got there first and made a left hand turn, getting through the crosswalk without any trouble.

Soon after, though, she told police that a woman appeared out of nowhere and was in front of her vehicle.

That woman, Jeannie Murphy, 64, of Baltimore evidently had been crossing the street on a diagonal outside of the crosswalk, trying to get to a restaurant to meet family members.

“She yelled at Coyne to stop at about the same time that she was struck by Coyne’s vehicle,” Brown wrote in a news release. “Murphy went to the ground, striking her head and injuring both her wrists.”

The sergeant said that the driver’s vision might have been partially obscured by the pillar post located at the front of the passenger door and the passenger-side windshield of the vehicle.

Coyne stopped immediately, as did the other car that had been in the intersection, which contained a doctor from Colorado. The doctor got out and helped Murphy until the ambulance crew arrived at the scene.

“The driver was a mess. She was crying,” Brown said.

The ambulance took the injured pedestrian to Pen Bay Medical Center in nearby Rockport, where she remained until around midnight Thursday, Brown said.

Police determined that the primary cause of the accident was pedestrian error, and have not filed any charges.
