BANGOR, Maine — Right-hander Justin Courtney struck out 13 batters in eight innings to lift the Bangor Comrades by Morrill Post of South Portland 4-1 in the nightcap of the American Legion baseball state tourney Wednesday night at Husson University’s Winkin Complex.
Bangor (19-4) advanced to a winners bracket contest against Pastime Club of Lewiston (17-5) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Morrill Post (19-2) will play an elimination game against Franklin County (12-9) at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Courtney allowed only five hits and walked two batters, finishing strong as he struck out the side in both the seventh and eighth innings. Left-hander Trevor DeLaite came on to pitch the ninth and he also struck out the side after giving up a two-out walk.
Kyle Stevenson tripled twice and drove in a run for the Comrades.
Hunter Boyce scored Bangor’s first run in the second on Ryan Gagne’s bases-loaded fielder’s choice. Boyce and Ben Crichton both singled and Ryan Brookings walked to load the bases.
Morrill Post responded with a run in the bottom of the third when Robert Graff’s sacrifice fly plated Nick Troiano, who had tripled.
Bangor added single runs in the fourth and fifth. Brookings smacked a single to left to score Boyce, who drew a walk, in the fourth and Andrew Hillier came across in the fifth after also drawing a walk and eventually scoring on an infield error.
Stevenson slammed his second triple in ninth, driving in DeLaite, who beat out an infield single.
Earlier Wednesday, Riley Chickering scattered seven hits over nine innings to lead Bessey Motors of South Paris (19-3) by Oakland Post 51 7-2.
Chickering struck out six and walked only two to help his team advance to a winners bracket game against Brewer at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Brewer beat Staples Crossing Post 188 of Eliot 4-1 in 10 innings.
In the day’s third game, Pastime Club edged Franklin County 3-2.
Staples Crossing will take Oakland (10-12) at 10 a.m. Thursday in an elimination game.
Bessey received production from the bottom of its order as No. 9 hitter Zach Conley singled twice and drove in three runs while No. 7 hitter Matt Smith chipped in with a double, single and two RBIs. Ty Martin added two singles and a double, scoring three runs while Dalton Rice added a single and double and Nick Attaliades-Ryan singled twice.
Zack Mathieu and Jake Dexter each singled and drove in a run for Oakland.
The third game featured another strong pitching matchup as Pastime’s Kyle Bourget prevailed after holding Franklin County to six hits and four walks while striking out five.
Pastime rallied to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Wong tripled, singled and drove in a run to spark the offense. Ryan Riordan chipped in with a double, single and RBI while Carter Chabot also drove in a run. Bourget singled twice.
Tough-luck losing pitcher Amos Herrin struck out nine while giving up eight hits and four walks. He aided his cause with a double, single and RBI.
