WESTBROOK, Maine — More than 40 residents were displaced by a fire Wednesday evening at the Dolley Brook Condominiums on East Bridge Street, fire officials report.

Investigators say the fire started in the kitchen of one of the condos around 8 p.m.

When emergency responders arrived they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the building housing units 9-15, officials said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries thanks in part to the actions of neighbors who went door to door alerting residents.

Mutual aid units from Portland, Falmouth, Gorham, Scarborough and Windham were called to assist Westbrook firefighters with extinguishing the blaze.

Fire, smoke and water damaged 24 units and displaced about 45 residents, officials said, adding that the Red Cross was assisting the displaced residents.
