SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A 45-year-old woman was taken to a hospital Tuesday morning after police learned she had been threatening to harm herself.
When officers arrived at a Broadway apartment complex, they encountered the woman, whose name was not disclosed, cutting her arms with a pair of scissors and bleeding, according to South Portland Police Lt. Frank Clark.
The apartment complex is adjacent to the South Portland Municipal Golf Course, which was occupied by golfers at the time, Clark said.
When police tried to get the woman to drop the scissors, she was non-compliant, Clark said, but one officer was able to get close enough to deploy a Taser, allowing police to disarm the woman.
The woman was taken to Maine Medical Center for an evaluation and has since been released, Clark said.
Restraint by police and the use of the Taser likely prevented the situation from potentially becoming deadly, Clark said.
