BANGOR, Maine — Brewer’s Matt Pushard held Bangor to five hits to lift the Falcons by the Comrades 8-2 in the Zone1 American Legion baseball championship Sunday at Husson University’s Winkin Complex.
Zone 1 champion Brewer will open the state Legion tourney when it plays Staples Cross-Post 188 of Eliot at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Winkin Complex. Bangor will take on Morrill Post of South Portland at 6:30 p.m.
Zone 1 automatically gets two berths in the state tourney this year by virtue of being the host zone for that event.
In other state games, Post 51 of Oakland will take on Bessey Motors at 12:30 p.m. and Pastime club of Lewiston will play Franklin County at 3:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Bangor beat Brewer 2-1 in the day’s first game to force the final contest in the double-elimination tourney.
In the final, Brewer erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to break open a one-run game and earned the win when rain ended the game after seven innings.
Sunday’s first game ended suddenly in the top of the ninth when Brewer’s Brendan Moore doubled down the left-field line to drive home Alex Maxsimic with the Falcons’ first run of the game before Kyle Alexander’s bid to score a second run on the play was cut down at the plate to preserve Bangor’s 2-1 victory.
Jordan Treadwell, James Prescott and Andrew Hillier combined on a seven-hitter for the Comrades, with Treadwell earning the win and Hillier the save in his third pitching appearance of the tournament.
Brewer’s Carter DeRedin took the loss, with the Falcons also yielding just seven hits and both teams playing errorless defense.
