BLUE HILL – Joan Betty Bowker Babson died peacefully and went to be with her Lord on July 23, 2014 in Ellsworth. She was born in Machias, April 22, 1932, daughter of Mildred Katherine Bowker Hatt and grew up with her grandparents, Eva and Harland Bowker.

She lived with her grandparents in Blue Hill and was a graduate of George Stevens Academy. Her first job was a local telephone operator. She also worked as a waitress at the Taco Restaurant in Blue Hill, worked for the Bangor Hydro Company, and was a sales person at Madeline’s Fashions. Joan opened her own yarn shop at her home and always had handwork going and loved to share her creations with her dear friend, Alma Gray before giving them away. Later she worked at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital as a switchboard operator, and retired as a teller from the Union Trust Bank. Joan was a member of the Congregational Church after she and Bill married and as the years went on, became a member of the Baptist churches of Blue Hill and East Blue Hill. She was active in the East Blue Hill church and loved the simplicity and closeness of the congregation. She loved to sing hymns, and bring her elder friends to church suppers. Her sister Sue mentioned that she was all about “paying it forward” …taking care of those in her community. Joan enjoyed square dancing with Bill in their early years together, camping, picking berries, gardening, and going on bus trips with close friends. She loved visiting and caring for her mother, Snookie in Machias, and spending time with and making cookies for her young grandsons.

She is survived by daughters, Anita Babson Campbell and son-in-law, Kevin Campbell, Kathy Babson, and Alma Babson Mote; grandsons, Gavin and Eric Mote; sister, Suzanne Hatt Brodowski; brother, Julian Hatt; nieces, Lisa Munoz, Leighann Novotney, Willie Hatt and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill; mother, Mildred Katherine Bowker Hatt; and grandparents, Eva and Harland Bowker.

The family wants to gratefully acknowledge the loving care she received over the past eight years at Island Nursing Home, Davis Estates in Machias, Jed Prouty Residential Home and especially Courtland Rehab & Living Center.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the East Blue Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Peter Gray officiating. Contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 383 US Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04070. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 49 Main St., Blue Hill.
