LOUISVILLE, Maine — The Maine-MBR 16-and-under boys basketball team concluded pool play at the AAU Division I 10th-Grade National Championships on Friday evening with a 63-59 loss to WCBA-North Carolina.
The Maine squad, 1-2 in pool play, moved on to the single-elimination Classic Division of the tourney and was scheduled to play Minnesota at 1:20 p.m. Saturday.
WCBA, the North Carolina Division I champion, led 19-10 after the first period and 46-31 at halftime. Its advantage grew to as many as 19 points early in the fourth quarter before Maine-MBR used full-court defensive pressure to trigger a furious comeback.
Consecutive baskets by Andrew Fleming of Oxford Hills of South Paris, Hunter Smith of Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft and Tom Coyne of Falmouth drew the Maine team within 60-56 with 2:03 left in the contest.
Maine-MBR then had to foul in the final half-minute of play, and North Carolina made three of four attempts from the line to preserve its four-point victory.
Coyne paced the Maine attack with 20 points, 16 in the second half, while Fleming scored 19 points, and Smith and Conary Moore of Hampden Academy added eight points each.
