MAC U17 all-stars fall to Pennsylvania team at AAU nationals

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — The Maine Athletic Club 17-and-under boys basketball team fell victim to a third-period slump Saturday morning and dropped a 57-52 decision to the Basketball Stars of America-Freeman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the championship bracket of the AAU Division I 11th-Grade National Championships.

The loss dropped MAC to 2-2 at the nationals and relegated the team to a first-round consolation bracket game on Sunday.

MAC held a 28-19 halftime lead but was outscored 22-7 during the third quarter as BSA-Freedman took a 41-35 lead into the final period before maintaining a slight cushion to the finish.

Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists for MAC, while Nick Mayo of Messalonskee of Oakland added 14 points and five rebounds. Dayne Savage of Caribou contributed nine points and four rebounds, while Ben Malloy of Bonny Eagle of Standish scored six points. Justin Martin of Winslow had five points and four rebounds.
