BANGOR, Maine — The Franklin County Flyers never trailed after scoring twice in the top of the first inning en route to a 4-1 victory over Biddeford & Saco Savings Bank of Westbrook in the first of two play-in games of the state American Legion baseball tournament Saturday.
Bessey Motors of South Paris defeated Fayette-Staples of Saco 11-1 in eight innings in the second play-in game held at the Winkin Complex on the campus of Husson University.
Franklin County, which draws players from Mt. Blue High School in Farmington and Mount Abram High School of Salem, improved its record to 12-8 and will face Zone 3 (western Maine) tournament champion Pastime Club of Lewiston (16-5) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the double-elimination state tournament, also slated to be held at Husson University.
Franklin County was the Zone 2 (central Maine) regular-season and tournament runner-up.
Westbrook, the runner-up from Zone 4 (Portland area), ended its season with a 13-7 record.
Like Franklin County, Zone 3 runner-up Bessey Motors (18-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never trailed in its play-in victory.
Bessey Motors, which draws its players from Oxford Hills of South Paris, Lake Region of Naples, Fryeburg Academy and Saint Dominic of Auburn, put the game away under the 10-run rule with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Bessey Motors will play its first state tournament game at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday against Post 51 of Oakland (10-11), the Zone 2 champion.
Fayette-Staples, the Zone 5 (York County) concluded its season with a 12-9 record.
