BANGOR, Maine — Top-seeded Bangor joined Brewer as Zone 1 representatives to the American Legion baseball state tournament Saturday night.

All that remains to be determined is the order of finish.

Bangor clinched its state tourney berth with a 11-1 victory over Trenton in an Zone 1 tournament elimination game at the Winkin Complex on the campus of Husson University.

The game ended in the bottom of the eighth inning under the 10-run rule.

Peter Kemble, who will be a sophomore at Bangor High School this fall, pitched a complete-game four-hitter for Bangor. The righthander struck out four batters and walked three and faced more than four batters in an inning just once.

Kemble’s mound work was complemented by a nine-hit Bangor offense paced by designated hitter Justin Courtney, who amassed four singles, a walk, two stolen bases, three runs scored and three RBIs. Trevor DeLaite singled twice for the Comrades while Sam Huston added a double and three RBIs.

Coach Dave Morris’ Bangor club (18-3 overall, 2-1 in Zone 1 tourney play) will need to defeat No. 3 Brewer (15-5, 2-0) twice Sunday to claim the Zone 1 title. That championship round, originally scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., has been moved up to 10 a.m. in light of threatening weather reports.

Brewer edged Bangor 6-5 in their earlier tournament meeting Friday night.

Second-seeded Trenton ended its season with a 14-7 record.

Bangor capitalized on three Trenton errors to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning against Trenton starter Steven Hanscom. Ryan Brookings reached on an error to open the inning, stole second base and then scored when Hanscom threw wildly on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Gagne.

Gagne reached second on the play, went to third on DeLaite’s opposite-field single to right and scored on a double-play grounder by Kyle Stevenson.

Courtney drew a two-out walk, stole second and raced all the way home as Andrew Hillier reached on an infield error to give the Comrades a three-run lead.

Trenton got one run back in the top of the fourth on Gage Feeney’s two-out, two-strike RBI single to left field that drove home Tony Bianco from third base. Bianco had drawn a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout by Sid St. Peter and went to third on a wild pitch.

The Acadians stranded a two-out runner in scoring position an inning later, then Bangor loaded the bases after two were out on the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back singles by Stevenson and Courtney and a four-pitch walk to Hillier.

Huston followed by driving the eighth pitch of his at-bat down the right-field line and just out of the reach of diving Trenton outfielder Will Ricker for a two-run double that extended the Comrades’ lead to 5-1.

Trenton put two runners aboard with two outs in the sixth as Bianco reached on an error and St. Peter singled to right, but this time Kemble reared back to strike out Feeney to end the inning.

A two-out, two-run single by Courtney drove home Brookings and Gagne in the bottom of the sixth as Bangor’s lead grew to 7-1.

Huston drew a leadoff walk in the seventh off Feeney, who had replaced Hanscom on the mound to open the inning. Two wild pitches advanced Huston to third base before he scored to make it 8-1 on a throwing error, Trenton’s fourth miscue of the game.

DeLaite singled to lead off the Bangor eighth and scored on a one-out single by Courtney. Courtney advanced to second on the throw home, stole third and followed a walk to Hillier by scoring on a Huston groundout to make it 10-1.

When Hillier then scored on a passed ball, the Comrades had their 10-run margin of victory.
