Maine U16 basketball team beaten at buzzer in AAU nationals

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — The Maine-MBR 16-and-under boys basketball team fell to 1-1 in pool play at the AAU Division I 10th Grade National Championships on Thursday after falling to Ohio 41-40 at the buzzer.

Andrew Fleming of Oxford Hills in South Paris paced the Maine contingent with 20 points, while Foxcroft Academy’s Hunter Smith added 12.

Maine-MBR was slated to conclude pool play Friday against the North Carolina Division I state championship team. After pool play, the team will be seeded for future tournament play based on its record.

The Maine team, coached by Rick Moore and Kevin Black, trailed Ohio 25-21 at halftime but narrowed the deficit to 31-30 by the end of the third quarter, despite having four of its eight players saddled with four fouls each.

A layup by Fleming produced a 37-37 tie with two minutes left in the game, but Ohio answered with a jumper to make it 39-37 with 48 seconds remaining before Falmouth guard Tom Coyne hit a 3-pointer to make give Maine-MBR a 40-39 edge with 28 seconds to play.

After two changes of possessions, Ohio ended up with the ball along the baseline near its basket with four seconds left. The ball then passed into the free-throw lane, but after a short scrum for the ball Ohio ended up with possession and a last-second shot that bounced around the rim and fell in as time expired.
