Firefighters stopped fire from damaging wood grinding machine in Mattawamkeag

By Nick Sambides Jr., BDN Staff

MATTAWAMKEAG, Maine — Firefighters needed a little over two hours to extinguish a fire that began in a tub grinder at a railroad tie manufacturing facility on Green Road on Friday. No injuries were reported, Deputy Chief Zane England said.

Reported at about 11:51 a.m., the fire at Perma Treat Corp., 26 Green Road, didn’t damage the machine, which is about the size of a trailer to an 18-wheel truck, England said. But it was exceptionally difficult to track.

“It wasn’t too bad. It got up into one of the big belts of the machine that we had to get into — we had to access panels to get at it,” England said.

The tub grinder was recycling old railroad ties when the fire occurred, England said. Firefighters had the fire reported under control within a half-hour and were able to return to the station at about 2 p.m.
