Saco, Falmouth to battle for Little League state title Friday

BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Saco all-stars defeated Falmouth 10-7 in the championship round of Little League state baseball tourney for ages 11-12 Thursday to force a second game between the two teams at 4 p.m. Friday.

The winner advances to the New England Regional in Bristol, Connecticut.

Falmouth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ike Kiely walked, Brady Douglas reached on an error and both scored on Josh Lefevre’s single.

Saco came right back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Calvin Christoforo after a Grant Dow single.

In the third, Saco took a 6-2 lead when Will Mitchell cranked a three-run home run.

Saco scored four more runs in the fourth. Kobe Gaudette doubled and scored on a single by Ben Ham. Dow walked and scored on Mitchell’s second three-run homer of the game.

Falmouth answered with five runs in the fifth, benefiting from two Saco errors, and a two-

run homer by Jackson Quinn to cut the lead to 10-7.

Falmouth threatened again in the sixth, bringing the tying run to the plate after singles from Brady Douglas and Sam Manganello, but Dow made a great catch on a sinking line drive to center to save the game.

Dow finished with two singles for Saco while Lefevre notched two singles and a double for Falmouth.

Scarborough wins title

At Auburn on Wednesday, Scarborough shut out Ellsworth 9-0 to capture the state Little League title for ages 9-10.

Scarborough finished with a 4-0 record in the tourney after beating Hermon 20-1, defeating Kennebunk 13-2 and Ellsworth 14-0. Ellsworth emerged from the losers bracket on Tuesday after eliminating Auburn Suburban 5-3.

Cape Elizabeth wins state title

At Waldoboro, Anna Cornell held South Lewiston to four hits to lead Cape Elizabeth to a 9-1 victory in the Little League softball state championship for ages 9-10 Tuesday.

The effort capped a performance in which Cornell struck out 45 batters in three days.

In the final, she also contributed offensively with two singles. Abby Agrondia, Esme Song, Katherine Callahan, Katharine Blackburn and Kathryne Clay each added a single.

Gemma Landry, Skylar Gelinas, Sydney Roy and Bella Perryman each singled for South Lewiston. Landry struck out 36 batters in three tourney days.

In Tuesday’s earlier games, South Lewiston eliminated Biddeford 9-3 and Cape Elizabeth ousted Ellsworth 4-2.

In the first game, Gelinas paced South Lewiston with a triple and double while Emily Strachan added a double and single. Lauren Foster added two singles while Charlotte Cloutier and Abby Svor each had one.

Aliyah Bureau notched a double for Biddeford while Charlotte Donovan, Chantelle Bouchard, Laura Perreault, Anna Lavigne and Jayme Walton each added a single.

In the second game, Cornell picked up the pitching win for Cape Elizabeth and also contributed with a single and double. Agrondia and Clay each added a double.

Julia Perconti and Kaylee Morey each singled for Ellsworth.
